We have been raising grass-fed Katahdin sheep for almost four years now. They are known as "hair" sheep, which means their wool sheds naturally and we don't have to shear them. They are named after the tallest mountain Peake in Maine. They are known for their ease in lambing, their mothering skill and their excellent meat.
We started our herd with 5 ewes (female) lambs. We named them after Disney fairies: Flora, Fauna, and Meriwether; Rosetta and Tinkerbell. We love these original ewes and plan to keep them as our breeding ewes for many years.
Our first round of lambing went excellent - each ewe produced one healthy lamb. We kept three of the "daughters" of our original ewes and brought in a new ram for our second lambing season.
We've had multiple rounds of lambs born since our first round and in fact our herd was up to 31 before Christmas. At the end of December 2021 we took over a dozen lambs to market and have a huge, industrial freezer filled with delicious lamb meat!
Katahdins are known for their quality of meat and we have been very pleased with the taste and quality of the lamb we get when we take them to the processor. Lamb meat is considered "lamb" until the animal is a year old. Then it is considered mutton. We take our lambs in before a year so we get excellent tasting meat.
